We are very lucky to have the only Belgian born brew master in all of BC at the helm. Cédric loves experimenting with many different varieties of ingredients and strains of yeast which is showcased in our diverse line up. Some of which you can drink year round or on a seasonal basis while others are more rare and daring.

LEGACY

These are the beers that have been chosen by the powers that be and are available year round. Crafted to be a part of anything, at anytime, anywhere; they are that versatile.

There is one exception in this list of brews however – Our Suncoast Pale Ale is only available on the Sunshine Coast. That’s right, if you want it you’ve gotta come to this little slice of heaven and enjoy it here. Sorry (not really sorry, but you won’t be either).

SEASONALS

Every 4-6 weeks we release one of our seasonal brews. Ranging in styles from Sours to Saisons, Blackberry ales to a Wet-hopped IPA, Barrel aged stouts and of course our signature Belgian brews. These limited offerings are our shining stars throughout the year and have gained quite a following.

Grab them before they’re gone; these brews have legs.

HULKS

The Hulk series is a unique, single-batch project inspired by the floating breakwater system that protects the harbour of the local pulp mill. Enjoy them while you can as Cédric’s one of kind experiments are very limited (and extremely delicious). How limited you ask? Like the precious resource of gold or a four leaf clover or a piece of gold in the shape of a 4 leaf clover – okay yeah, that limited.

PERFECT STORM

TYPE:
Oatmeal Stout

DEFINITION:
1. what happens when the perfect mix of people come together to form a brewery; 2. a delicious oatmeal stout

We’ve got a truly great team here at Townsite and every day we are thankful that we get to work with each other producing some really great beer. As Chloe is often heard to remark, ‘What we have here is a perfect storm: from brewing, to sales, to distribution & marketing.’

To celebrate this serendipity, Cédric has brewed up the perfect storm of a beer: a rich, round, roasty oatmeal stout using flaked oats and roasted barley to add to our house roast malts (Chocolate and Crystal) and hopped with Columbus, Cascade and Golding.

POW TOWN

TYPE:
Porter

DEFINITION:
1. how locals refer to Powell River, BC, a historic lumber town on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of BC; 2. a porter-style beer

Coffee and roast smells on the nose, a round and smooth malty mouth feel, this beer has a low hop profile and is predominantly malty. Some of the malts used are highly roasted which adds an astringency that offsets the sweetness of the residual sugar and the caramel flavours of the other malts used. Think bittersweet chocolate and caramel.

This beer is exactly what the doctor ordered for a cozy night fireside or post-Polar Bear swim!

1. logger slang for hard hat;
2. a peak (elev. 1193m) along the 180km Sunshine Coast Trail;
3. a West Coast IPA

Loads of pungent, piney, citrusey hops give Tin Hat IPA a strong bitterness that is balanced with a malty body. Pair with strong flavours: curry, smoked meat, Gorgonzola cheese.

7800 SAISON

TYPE:
Saison

DEFINITION: 1. the distance, as the cuckoo flies, between our brewer’s hometown and Powell River; 2. a delicious Belgian-style saison.

A classic unfiltered Belgian-style Saison as brewed in the southern farmland of Belgium where Townsite’s brewmaster Cédric was born and raised. The name is a reference to the distance as the cuckoo flies between his hometown of Horrues and his new home of Powell River.

This refreshing beer uses a blend of yeast and is hopped with Columbus, Saaz and Hallertau – the perfect beer for a late summer harvest evening.

Blackberry FestivAle is our seasonal salute to Powell River’s favourite fruit, the humble and ubiquitous blackberry. It is brewed every August in time for the Blackberry Festival and its flagship event, the Blackberry Street Party!

So many people asked Cédric to bring back Charleston, the first beer he brewed for the Hulks Series, that he finally agreed to bring it back as a seasonal; however, he made it just a little bit different.

This Charleston (Charleston 2.0, if you will) has a soft & creamy mouth-feel, complemented by a nice hop bitterness and 9.0% alcohol. Essentially, everything you want in a beer and then some!

KATHAUMIXW

TYPE:
Bière de Garde

Kathaumixw is a biennial international choral festival hosted in Powell River. For 5 days in July, the town is filled with the beautiful voices of dozens of choirs from all over the world. Languages pose no boundaries – people from different cultures come together to share the common language of song.

Cédric was thrilled to be asked to create a special beer inspired by this festival. To honour Kathaumixw, he has brewed a Bière de Garde, a strong pale ale or (literally) ‘keeping beer’ traditionally brewed in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. This version is peppery & earthy from the northern European hops, and fruity from the Belgian yeast.

Please note: this is a biennial seasonal, brewed only during Kathaumixw years.

LIL’ RED 3.0

TYPE:
Sour Red Ale

DEFINITION:
n. 1. punchy red chair photobombing Powell River landscapes since August 2010; 2. Belgian ale made with candi sugar and bottle conditioned with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis.

Each year, Lil’ Red changes. This year Cédric and team decided to bring this punchy red ale to the next level. Brettanomyces Bruxellensis was added to the bottles for natural carbonation. Which means there are 2 versions
of this beer this year. The bottle and the keg will be different, one a sweet and tangy refresher and one with a layer of horse blanket funk.

The vibrant acidity of this beer is a dead ringer for shellfish. It is delicate and fruity enough for spot prawns with just a hint of sweetness to complement scallops in herbed butter perfectly.

SHINY PENNY

TYPE:
Belgian IPA

DEFINITION: 1. a brilliant yet unrealized vision of a gastropub in the prairies; 2. a delicious Belgian-style IPA

Belgian-style IPA’s are a relatively new beer style in North America and are marked by a higher ABV, strong hops and a delicate fruity nose. Think: grapefruit and passion fruit mix in a heavenly marriage of boozy elixir.

The name of this beer is a nod to the gastropub that Cédric & Chloe planned to open in Saskatoon. Fortunately for everyone in BC, this didn’t pan out and they moved to Powell River to head the brew crew at Townsite instead!

TIMEWARP

TYPE:
Wet-hopped Pale Ale

DEFINITION:
1. what you step into when you step off the ferry on Texada Island; 2. a delicious wet-hopped pale ale.

In time for BC Craft Beer Month, Townsite’s Brewer Engineer Cédric Dauchot unleashes a wet-hopped pale ale, brewed with locally-sourced hops including certified organic Windfall Farms hops as well as wild hops from certain secret Texada Island locations.

Although not an IPA, this pale ale still packs a hoppy punch so prepare your nose hairs to curl up and let out a happy sigh. Its well-rounded maltiness makes this a session beer to anticipate with relish every October.

WESTVIEW WHEAT

Witbier

DEFINITION: 1. the direction of every view in Powell River and features the epic Comox Glacier; 2. a refreshing summer seasonal witbier

This witbier is spicy and citrusy with a golden orange effervescence. It is hazy by design as this style of beer is typically unfiltered. The yeast adds a layer of body to this otherwise light and easy sipper.

When pairing this beer with foods, it is easy to play on its citrusy character: salad with vinaigrette; grilled fish with lemon & parsley; a charcuterie platter of cheeses, meats, olives and pickled onions. MMMMMM!

HULKS

From the brewery, we can see the largest floating breakwater in the world made up of decommissioned concrete ships known locally as simply ‘The Hulks’.

Each Hulk has a unique history, so we wanted to make a unique beer for each one. As Cédric is Belgian, he naturally chose to brew styles from his homeland for the series. You will recognize the beers in this series by the Canadian-Belgian flag on the label.

CHARLESTON

TYPE:

Charleston is the first of the series and was brewed in honour of the first vessel to be delivered to Powell River to form the breakwater.

YOGN 82

Belgian Triple

This second beer of the series is dedicated to YOGN 82, the vessel which replaced Charleston in the breakwater. It is a fresh take on last year’s Charleston, the triple that started off the series, sort of a Charleston 2.0 if you will, with the same floral nose but less boozy aromas, more citrus notes and a lighter body. Be sure to handle this one with care or you may not see the 9% ABV coming until it’s too late …

Each Hulk also features ‘Artist’s Series’ labels: artwork created by different local Powell River artists. YOGN 82 features the art of Emma Bell who had this to say about her piece:

‘Although never graced with a name, Yard Oiler (Gasoline, Unpowered) 82 served in the Pacific theatre at Leyte, in the Phillipines. Being a fuel barge may not be the most glamourous of war roles, but provided an essential service nonetheless.’

LE CHATELIER

TYPE:
Sour Belgian Ale

The 2015 HULK series beer is all about Cédric’s new passions: souring and wood aging.

First he added Lactobacillus bacteria to the kettle to bring the pH way down, giving this beer a nice tart sour flavour.

After fermentation he added oak spirals to infuse a nice round woody element into the beer.

The S.S. Henri LeChatelier was built in 1944 and operated to trade sugar for a few years before putting in a war appearance as a store ship in the South Pacific.

Officially retired from service in 1948, she joined the other ‘dry dockers’ that form the breakwater for the Catalyst Mill in Powell River, B.C.

THADDEUS

TYPE:
Oud Bruin

A lacto starter gone awry, a new manoeuvre we call ‘the black sparge’, a fermentation left in the barrel room and forgotten. These are the ingredients that came together to make the beer we call Thaddeus.

A collaboration last fall with our friends at Gladstone Brewing called for a lactobacillus starter, a sour black Saison was to be made. The morning after pitching lacto into 20 ish Litres of wort Scott and Cedric came in to find a vigorous fermentation happening, a sign that wild yeast had gotten in and taken over. Instead of dumping and restarting, Scott put that 20L in the barrel room to see what would happen.

A couple of months later when they revisited that vessel, a strong flavour of stone fruits (think cherries, plums) was detected and Scott and Cedric decided to investigate these flavours. A turbid mash was concocted with a dash of midnight wheat at the end of sparge, as Cedric is so wont to do these days, and into this was pitched our wild -yeast- lacto- starter. A new age version of the Oud Bruin style becomes a classic Townsite brew.
